Japanese motorcycles (and other Japanese products like hifi audio components, vintage toys, etc.) use JIS drive screws, not traditional Phillips.  They appear identical, but using a Phillips screw driver is sure to strip even brand new JIS screws.  Properly sized JIS screwdrivers seat fully in the cross to reliably transfer torque to the screw.
